Many notable wars have begun and ended without people taking time to truly understand them. It is the case that it is harder to understand something one has not experienced yet, and the war on poverty is not exempt from this. However, poverty has existed all throughout the history of mankind’s most notable societies, from the French revolution in 1789 which bloodied the halls of the Palace of Versailles to the Occupy Wall Street Movement in 2011 which reminded Americans that economic inequality is still prevalent. Perhaps another roadblock put in front of us, as explained in 7 Lies About Welfare by Danica Johnson, is the stigma people give to those of us who are less fortunate. When someone thinks of a person in poverty they think of homelessness at worst, living in subsidized housing at best. They don’t consider that it is not always like that. Some live in their own places and out of all the help provided, maybe they only need to use food stamps. Danica tells how most people do not even know what â€Å"welfare† even is, they just think of lazy individuals trying to cash in taxpayer money for luxury items and drugs. They don’t know what their tax dollars go toward, how much of it, and what the programs even do. In fact, most government assisted programs seek to provide only the bare minimum amount of help that an individual or a family need to survive. Also to be noted, mo st benefit programs require recipients to work at least 30 hours a week in order to be eligible. Sometimes even between 35-50 hours a week for two parent households. Montage, An Original Film Style - 1943 Words

Montage, a name synonymous with Editing, is an original film style with different techniques used by the Soviet filmmakers between 1924 and 1930 to construct a film narrative. Montage is the connection between one shot and the other, a continuous or discontinuous relationship between shots. According to David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson (2012: 478), Soviet directors maintained that, â€Å"through editing, two shots give birth to a feeling or idea not present in either one†. This ‘feeling’ or ‘idea’ then guides a viewer into understanding or making a â€Å"conceptual connection† of the narrative (Bordwell 1972: 10). Strike (1925) and Mother (1926), directed by Sergei Eisenstein and Vsevolod Pudovkin respectively, are films made in the Soviet Montage era that show a juxtaposition between shots across the film. This essay discusses the different techniques used in these films that show the functions and effects of Montage. The main functions of Montage are â€Å"to control rhythm, to create metaphors and to make rhetorical points† (Bordwell 1972: 9). Rhythm is the series of movement perceived from the consistent juxtaposition of shots. Continuity editing usually forms the rhythm of a narrative. Continuity editing as the name implies is â€Å"a system of cutting to maintain continuous and clear narrative action† (Bordwell and Thompson 2012: 500). Through activity-based costing, we can be able to more accurately assign overhead costs to each prod uct, which means the result can effectively reflect the actual costs on each product line. 3. The strategies that I would recommend to the company are: a. Cutting the price of pumps to better compete with other suppliers in the market. Comparing the product cost between the new activity-based system and traditional system, we can easily find out that the company has been overestimated the pump cost. Thus, they thought the profit margin should be merely 22%. By reallocating the overhead costs more accurately, we found the profit margin should be doubled to 40%. (Table 2) The number shows that the profit margin of pump is much higher than their estimation. Besides, the competitors in market have been cutting prices to attract more customers and opportunities. We suggest the company should start cutting the pump price to better compete with those pump suppliers in the market. b. Increase the price of flow controllers or give up the product line: First of all, after calculating the actual cost of flow controller by activity-based cost method (see table 2), we realized that Destin Co. has been â€Å"underestimated† the controller cost by $44. 41. The company’s current system made them believe the product has 42% gross margin when the actual margin is -4%. The company has been losing money in this product line without knowing the fact. They claimed that they once raised the price by 12. 5% with no apparent effect on demand. This reveals two possibilities: 1. There is still room for the company to raise their price to earn more profit. By setting the new price $155. 25, they can reach 35% profit margin. 2. The price was too low for other competitors to enter the market because Dustin, Co. has been miscalculated the cost. Under this circumstance, if they should also consider getting out of the market to stop losing money. Conclusion: By adapting the new pricing strategies, the company can earn $696,338. 85 gross profit comparing to the $541,092. 00 when using the traditional price setting. (See table 3). However, if the flow controller market demand decreases significantly after raising the prices, they can quit the market immediately to avoid losing money on this product line. 4. How Social Media Helped Me Land an Agent Like most writers these days, I have a love/hate relationship with social media. Yes, it can be one giant time vacuum. Were talking the granddaddy of vacuums- were talking Dyson. But writers need a life. Right? So the hours spent on Facebook are in the best interest of my career, right? They can be. With all the moaning about the downside of social media (mainly the time aspect), we writers tend to overlook the sheer beauty of what the various platforms provide: accessibility. Never before have we had the opportunity to be â€Å"friends† with so many publishers, agents, and other writers. Conferences are expensive and not everyone can afford to attend the more popular ones, the ones where big-name editors and agents are most likely to show up. Years ago, the only way to meet agents and editors was to attend conferences and hope you make the cut for a pitch session. Or hopefully grab a seat in their standing-room-only panel discussion. Or you could follow them into the bar, or restroom, or hotel elevator. In which case, if youre like most writers, youre a bit introverted so that elevator ride is probably going to be rather quiet. And the restroom thing- not cool. At all. Thats where social media comes in. Its much more pleasant, for all parties involved, to find an agent and follow them on Twitter than to follow them into a bathroom! If you prefer Facebook, send them a friend request. Follow their RSS feed. Comment on their posts. And comment again. And again. You know youre getting somewhere when the agent starts to comment on your comments. Im â€Å"friends† with and follow several agents. Ive had these cyber relationships for a year or more with various agents, and like any good relationship, it takes time to build. Ive been in the business long enough to say Ive sent my share of query letters to agents, without much success. But social media opened up not only a whole new door, but a golden door for me. Through Facebook, I was able to establish a friendly relationship with different agents before seeking a business relationship with just one. And even then, when I did approach the agent through a private message, it wasnt intended to be a query. I simply had a question, between friends, about the industry. That cyber conversation turned into a phone chat, which turned into longer talk which turned into an offer of representation. Social media not only helped me find my agent, it allowed me the opportunity to get to know her as a person before ever signing a contract. To me, thats just as important as how many deals theyve made. If I dont respect and like you as a person, how am I ever going to feel comfortable trusting you with my career? So go ahead and follow a couple of agents. You might be surprised where it can lead.

Biopsychosocial Paper Essay

Family Composition Steven currently lives with foster parents. There is another teen age male in the home. According Steven’s file prior to this placement he lived with his biological father, and prior to residing with his biological father Steven was placed in group homes and foster placements, having been previously been removed by CPS from his parent’s care due to substance abuse issues. Steven receives a weekly a weekly 2-hour visit with his biological mother that is supervised by an agency monitor. According to social worker’s case notes these visit take place at a local dinner. Steven is also eligible for weekly observed 1-hour visits with his biological father. However, social worker has written in his case notes that father can no longer make the visits with biological mother due to the fact that he now works graveyard shifts. Social worker’s quarterly report states that â€Å"the mother has had difficulty refraining from discussing inappropriate topics involving her family court case and related topics with Steven during visits. † Also, the mother would some times get defensive when redirected away from discussing these topics. The social worker also wrote in the Quarterly Report that Steven appeared to enjoy visiting with his mother, and would often ask her for things that his foster parents have already said he could not have until he earned it. But the biological mother has been supporting the foster parent’s by not giving into Steven’s begging. According to the Quarterly Report Steven’s foster parents have noticed that his behavioral difficulties at home appear to coincide with his supervised visits with his biological mother. Household Composition According to Steven’s file he has lived in his current placement since March 2, 2007. This home consists of the foster parents, and another teenager placed through the agency mental health program. Quarterly Report states that Steven’s foster father is the primary caregiver. Foster father has told social worker that Steven lies and manipulates the truth and then gets in trouble for this. Social worker states in his case notes that Steven does not appear to think that he is doing anything wrong. Overall, the social worker feels that Steven is comfortable in this home. According to the Quarterly report Steven’s foster father mainly works with him on talking care of his hygiene consistently. As part of an agreement to earn extra cash, Steven is expected to bathe, brush his teeth, apply deodorant, and comb his hair daily. Developmental/Current Health There is no information about Steven’s birth or early development. According to file Steven had a physical examination on April 27, 2007 and was â€Å"diagnosed as a well adolescent†. The doctor commented that he has a history of ADHD and Depression. Steven received new glasses in May 2007. Steven also had a dentist appointment on April 26, 2007 during which he had two cavities filled. Also according to Steven’s file, he has been prescribed psychotropic medications. These include Abilify and Ritalin. Mental Health According to file, Steven has been diagnosed with ADHD, Cognitive Disorder NOS, and Anxiety Disorder NOS. He is currently taking medications for these disorders. He presents with some of the classic ADHD symptoms such as inattention, restlessness, and impulsivity even when he is on his medication. The social worker stated that he is a â€Å"strange kid† and that he can’t or won’t look you in the eyes. He appears to lack self-esteem and self confidence. According to quarterly report, Stevens though process is scattered, and he is mentally and emotionally younger than his chronic logical age of fourteen. Social worker writes that is Steven does not get his way, he shows frustration by pouting, excessive questioning asking why he can’t get his way, and slamming doors. According to case notes, Steven has broken his glasses, a laundry basket, a DVD player, a PlayStation, and has punched a hole in the wall. Steven seems to lack social skills. Intake notes state that he has had a history of physical aggression towards peers at school, and that he is impulsive. Steven’s file indicated that he has been involved in a group through his WRAP services provider to help him with socialization skills, and he attends these meeting on a weekly basis. Steven also receives EMQ Wraparound services for his mental health needs. Quarterly Report states that Steven has an EMQ facilitator that coordinated these services. He receives therapy services once a week contracted through EMQ Family Services. In addition, he has two behaviorists who visit him once a week to work on behavior contracts. Steven is prescribed psychotropic medication. His psychiatrist also works for EMQ. Because these service providers are part of EMQ Wraparound program, Steven is supported with a whole network of specialists who cater to his specific mental health needs. Sexual History According to Steven’s social worker, he is starting to become interested in girls, and likes talking to them and getting their attention. Alcohol and Substance Use History Steven has no alcohol or substance abuse history, but his father has had problems with alcohol. This is why Steven was placed in protective custody. Educational History Steven is currently in the ninth grade at a local public high school. According to his file he has an active IEP that places him in a special day class for the emotionally disturbed (SDC/ED) children. Social worker writes that Steven can handle the class work and homework, but struggles emotionally and behaviorally during class. According to the social workers report, Steven’s last teacher noted that he has difficulty staying in his seat as well as disturbing the students in the class with his talking. According to Stevens IEP he falls within average range in reading, math, written language and oral expression. However, he has difficulty with listening comprehension, handwriting size and spacing, organizing, maintaining focus, and handling frustration. Prevocation skills listed as areas of concern on Steven’s IEP were task completion, social skills and follows directions. Also on the IEP as area’s of need include written language. According to Steven’s IEP, he is able to write multiple paragraphs, but lacks proper writing conventions. The IEP also shows that Steven is passing all his classes with a GPA above a 3. 0. Social worker states that Steven does not want to be in special education classes because it is â€Å"not cool†.

Cada aà ±o fiscal se tramitan aproximadamente un millà ³n de nuevas tarjetas de residencias. En este artà ­culo se informa sobre las 5 grandes categorà ­as para obtenerla y cules son las razones por las que la peticià ³n de la green card puede rechazarse. Conseguir la green card por và ­nculos familiares En Estados Unidos, la mayorà ­a de los migrantes obtienen la green card por peticià ³n de un familiar, que debe ser ciudadano de los Estados Unidos o residente permanente. Los ciudadanos estadounidenses pueden pedir los papeles para sus padres, cà ³nyuges, hijos y hermanos. Los progenitores, esposos e hijos solteros menores de 21 aà ±os tienen la consideracià ³n de familiares directos y la tramitacià ³n se demora, como regla general, en torno a los 12 meses. Sin embargo, las peticiones para hijos casados de cualquier edad, hijos solteros mayor de 21 aà ±os y hermanos se demoran aà ±os, incluso dà ©cadas. Adems, en el caso de pedir a un migrante mexicano, la demora es todavà ­a mayor. En todos estos casos el tiempo de espera va a venir determinado por la fecha de prioridad de la solicitud. Permiso de residencia por razones laborales Las empresas estadounidenses pueden solicitar una green card para trabajadores extranjeros, siempre que ese puesto de trabajo no pueda ser cubierto por ciudadanos americanos o residentes permanentes legales. Estas son las 100 empresas que ms patrocinan. Es posible que las empresas no patrocinen directamente la green card. De hecho, un amplio nà ºmero de extranjeros que son patrocinados por una empresa son profesionales titulares de una  H-1B  y que pueden utilizar su visa como trampolà ­n para conseguir la residencia en Estados Unidos. Esta es una de las pocas visas que tiene una naturaleza considerada de  doble intencià ³n. Es decir, en principio se concede por un plazo de  3 aà ±os  que se pueden extender hasta seis, pero durante este tiempo se puede realizar un ajuste de estatus, por razones familiares o laborales, y asà ­ conseguir la  green card.  Pero la H-1B no se convierte jams automticamente en una residencia, sino que debe haber una peticià ³n de la tarjeta por parte de una empresa. Asimismo, la visa  L-1, transfer entre empresas, tambià ©n es considerada de doble intencià ³n y permite buscar activamente un patrocinador de una green card. Adems de esos casos, existen situaciones especiales donde incluso no es necesario el patrocinio de una empresa. Por ejemplo, el caso de personas con habilidades especiales, como artistas, deportistas o cientà ­ficos de gran prestigio pueden autopatrocinarse una residencia permanente mediante la visa EB-1, ya que no hay necesidad de mostrar oferta de empleo previa. Cabe destacar que son casos excepcionales.   Loterà ­a de visas de diversidad para residencia en EE.UU. Cada aà ±o el gobierno de Estados Unidos sortea 50.000 visas de inmigrante conocidas como de diversidad que dan derecho a una green card para la persona que gane el sorteo, su cà ³nyuge y los hijos solteros menores de 21 aà ±os. Se aplica para esta loterà ­a todos los aà ±os al inicio del aà ±o fiscal estadounidense, es decir, en octubre, y sà ³lo se admiten solicitudes digitales. Se prohà ­be que participen los ciudadanos de paà ­ses con altas tasas de inmigracià ³n hacia EEUU. En estos momentos, los siguientes paà ­ses hispanoparlantes estn excluidos Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mà ©xico, Perà º y Repà ºblica Dominicana. El permiso de residencia para inversionistas Los extranjeros que inviertan un mà ­nimo de un millà ³n de dà ³lares y creen al menos diez puestos de trabajo en Estados Unidos tienen derecho a una visa EB-5 y acabar consiguiendo la green card. La cantidad a invertir puede reducirse a medio millà ³n de dà ³lares, si la inversià ³n se realiza en una determinada rea econà ³micamente deprimida designada asà ­ por las autoridades inmigratorias. Esta residencia en Estados Unidos es temporal, en el sentido de que pueden ser revocadas si no se mantienen los requisitos de cumplimiento durante cierto tiempo. Tradicionalmente era necesaria una inversià ³n directa, trabajando el inversor en el negocio. Ahora, sin embargo, se admite una inversià ³n indirecta. No hay que confundir esta visa de inmigrante EB-5 con las visas no inmigrante pero que tambià ©n se dan por inversià ³n y que se conocen como E-2, para todo tipo de negocios, o como E-1 para los casos de negocios de importacià ³n/exportacià ³n. Finalmente decir que, en contra de una creencia muy extendida, una inversià ³n inmobiliaria por muy cara que sea no es suficiente ni para obtener la green card por la visa EB-5 ni una visa no inmigrante, a travà ©s de la E-2. es necesario que se trate en ambos casos de un negocio real y activo. La green card por razones humanitarias Las personas que sufran considerable violencia fà ­sica y psicolà ³gica y, al mismo tiempo, ayuden a la policà ­a o a agencias del gobierno estadounidense en el esclarecimiento de un crimen podrà ­an vivir y trabajar en EEUU protegidos por una visa U. Tambià ©n existe la visa T para las và ­ctimas de trfico humano y una autopeticià ³n por VAWA para casos especà ­ficos de violencia domà ©stica. Asimismo, cabe destacar el programa de Inmigrantes Juveniles Especiales -SIJ, por sus siglas en inglà ©s- para jà ³venes que han sido abusados o abandonados por uno de sus padres o ambos. En todos estos casos, antes de iniciar cualquier tipo de tramitacià ³n es altamente recomendable asesorarse con un abogado migratorio puesto que si no sale bien la peticià ³n el migrante podrà ­a acabar siendo deportado. Situaciones especialespara sacar la green card Existen otros caminos para conseguir la green card, pero estn limitadas a casos muy especà ­ficos, como por ejemplo los de asilo y refugiados polà ­ticos o el registry, para los migrantes que pueden demostrar presencia continuada en Estados Unidos desde 1972, etc. Problemas para obtener la residencia permanente Reunir los requisitos para poder solicitar el permiso de residencia no garantiza que se vaya a conceder, pues hay causas que obligan a las autoridades migratorias a rechazar  la solicitud de la tarjeta de residencia porque no se cumplen los requisitos para ser admisible para ingresar a Estados Unidos. Cabe destacar que, aunque en la mayorà ­a de los casos es posible solicitar  perdà ³n en los casos de negacià ³n de la peticià ³n de permiso de residencia, es difà ­cil obtenerlo. Adems, en muchos casos, incluso no es posible ni siquiera pedirlo.
